The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Tuesday that it has identified 170 residents of the Gaza Strip who were killed during the recent conflict and were presented globally as journalists, but who simultaneously served as operatives in terrorist organizations. According to data released by the IDF, 118 of these individuals were active in Hamas's military wing, 49 were affiliated with Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), one belonged to the Desert Lions Battalion, and two were part of the Popular Resistance Committees.

The military stated that 17 of these individuals participated in the October 7th attacks on Israel. The IDF claims its findings are based on terrorist organizations' documents, intelligence information, and additional evidence gathered during operations in Gaza. Previously, the IDF had published documents including personnel lists, military course records, phone books, and salary slips, which it asserted proved the affiliation of individuals presented as journalists with Hamas and PIJ.

The IDF further stated that the elimination of over 40 individuals on this list led to condemnations against Israel from the United Nations. Some of these individuals reportedly also worked for international media outlets, including Reuters, CNN, ABC Australia, BBC, AFP, AP, and Le Monde. The IDF contends that a narrative has emerged globally during the war suggesting Israel intentionally targets journalists, without distinguishing between those solely engaged in journalism and those simultaneously serving in terrorist groups.

The IDF reiterated that journalists are not considered military targets due to their profession and are not attacked for their journalistic work. In conjunction with this revelation, the IDF has launched a dedicated website featuring the names and photographs of the 170 individuals, their alleged organizational affiliations and roles, along with publicly releasable evidence.
