Israel’s Central Elections Committee said Tuesday that no arrests of draft dodgers will be carried out on election day for the Knesset. The decision was made with the consent of Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Solberg, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, and Police Commissioner Danny Levy.
The officials said the arrangement is meant to ensure that “every voter will be able to reach the polling station without fear.” The statement added that Levy stressed the police would operate with reinforced forces on election day to guarantee that the vote is conducted properly and to maintain public order.
Solberg welcomed that commitment, according to the committee’s announcement. The decision sets the security and policing framework for voting day and confirms that draft-dodger arrests will not be used during the election itself.
