The Central Elections Committee said no enforcement operations targeting draft evaders will be carried out on the day of the Knesset election, after consultations led by committee chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg with Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and Police Commissioner Danny Levy.
The move was taken after appeals reached the committee and amid concern in the ultra-Orthodox community. According to the committee, the goal is to allow every eligible voter to exercise the democratic right to vote without fear or pressure.
Following the requests, Sohlberg, who is also deputy president of the Supreme Court, and acting committee director general Dean Libneh contacted Baharav-Miara and Levy. After the consultations, the sides agreed that there would be no enforcement operations at all on election day related to the recruitment of draft evaders.
Levy said that despite the decision, police will deploy in reinforced numbers nationwide on election day. He said the preparations are intended to ensure the elections proceed properly and to maintain public order. Sohlberg welcomed the agreement and praised the cooperation between the different officials ahead of voting day.
