French Mayor Excludes Left-Wing Party from October 7th Memorial Ceremony
The mayor of Carcassonne, France, has announced that the local left-wing council group will not be invited to a ceremony commemorating the victims of the October 7th Hamas attacks. The decision stems from stances taken by figures on the French left regarding the massacre and the political alliances of the Socialist Party.
During a city council meeting, the mayor stated that on October 7th, the city would mark the Hamas atrocities and inaugurate a memorial for the victims. This monument will be the second of its kind in France, following one in Nice. "The meaning of this monument is to permanently engrave in our city the memory of the October 7th victims and to pass this memory on to future generations," he explained.
The mayor then declared his decision to exclude the local left-wing faction, led by Mr. Soler-Elkraz, from the ceremony. He cited the positions expressed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Philippe Poutou concerning October 7th, as well as the alleged political alliances of the Socialist Party. "I hope that Mr. Soler-Elkraz and his colleagues will have the decency not to attend," the mayor added.
He emphasized that there could be no ambiguity at the ceremony, stating, "A ceremony dedicated to the memory of the October 7th victims cannot, in my view, tolerate any ambiguity regarding the condemnation of the atrocities committed that day and the fight against antisemitism."
