Haifa Death Mystery Becomes Murder Probe; Husband Suspected

An investigation into the death of 31-year-old Yanina (Yunit) Masswada in Haifa has turned into a murder investigation, with her husband, Ali Masswada, 28, now the primary suspect. Initial findings from the autopsy significantly strengthen the suspicion that he stabbed her to death in their home. The couple's two-month-old baby is left without a mother.

The dramatic turn in the investigation was revealed Tuesday, following initial reports that Masswada's death was not natural. Her husband claimed during questioning that his wife attempted to harm herself. A Haifa Magistrate's Court extended his arrest by three days.

Emergency services were called to the couple's apartment in Haifa's downtown on Friday after reports of a woman critically injured. Yunit was rushed to Rambam Hospital, where she was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts. Initially, police did not definitively label the incident as criminal, stating an investigation was underway to determine the circumstances.

However, autopsy results have contradicted the husband's self-harm narrative, pointing strongly towards him as the perpetrator. Based on these findings, police requested and were granted an extension of his detention.

Details revealed by the Michal Sela Forum, an organization supporting victims of domestic violence, highlighted that Yunit had no family in Israel and left behind a two-month-old infant. The forum stated they are providing support to Yunit's family and her mother in Belarus.
