Haifa Death Mystery Becomes Murder Probe; Husband Suspected

An investigation into the death of 31-year-old Yanina (Yunit) Masswada in Haifa has become a murder investigation, with her husband, 28-year-old Ali Masswada, now the primary suspect. Initial findings from an autopsy significantly strengthened suspicions that he stabbed her to death in their home. The husband had claimed his wife attempted to harm herself.

Police were called to the couple's apartment in Haifa's downtown on Friday after reports of a woman critically injured. Paramedics attempted to revive Yunit Masswada en route to Rambam Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Initially, authorities did not definitively label the incident as criminal, stating an investigation was underway into all possibilities.

The husband was detained for questioning, and the victim's body was sent to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute. Autopsy results, however, contradicted the husband's self-harm narrative, pointing strongly towards him as the perpetrator. Based on these findings, prosecutors requested and were granted an extension of his detention by three days by the Haifa Magistrate's Court.

Yunit Masswada leaves behind a two-month-old baby. The Michal Sela Forum, an organization supporting victims of domestic violence, stated they are assisting the family and the victim's mother, who is in Belarus. The forum noted that little information about Yunit had been published previously, as she had no family in Israel.
