Hapoel Jerusalem Owner: Israel's Situation Prevented EuroLeague Berth

Matan Adelson, the owner of Israeli basketball club Hapoel Jerusalem, revealed in a podcast interview that the team's pursuit of a wildcard spot in the EuroLeague was likely thwarted by the ongoing security situation in Israel. Adelson stated that Hapoel Jerusalem submitted the highest bid for the wildcard, but the uncertainty surrounding games in Israel due to the war led the EuroLeague to deny their application. He believes that had the situation been different, the team would have secured the spot.

Adelson discussed his personal motivations for entering European basketball, explaining that while he had opportunities to invest in NBA, Premier League, and NFL teams, he chose Hapoel Jerusalem because of his emotional connection and desire to be deeply involved. He acknowledged that the venture is currently a financial loss, but emphasized the significant business opportunities, networking, and learning experiences gained from owning the club.

He outlined three main goals for Hapoel Jerusalem: competing at the highest European level, making a positive impact on the local community and representing Israel globally, and strengthening the community. Adelson also touched upon the logistical and financial challenges the club faced after the October 7th attacks, including relocating to Belgrade and incurring substantial costs for hosting games abroad, estimating each such game costs the club around $500,000.

Regarding the NBA Europe project, Adelson expressed optimism about its potential but cautioned that some reported figures might be unrealistic. He also addressed the team's rivalry with Maccabi Tel Aviv, acknowledging their larger player budget but asserting that Hapoel Jerusalem's strategy and on-court performance are key to success, citing past victories against them despite a smaller budget.
