Grocer Sentenced to 16 Months for Evading NIS 5 Million in Taxes

A 70-year-old grocery store owner from Gedera has been sentenced to 16 months in actual prison by the Rehovot Magistrate's Court for evading approximately NIS 5 million in taxes. The sentence, handed down recently, is less than the two to four years imprisonment sought by the prosecution. The indictment stated that the grocer evaded taxes between 2011 and 2020.

Through his lawyer, Yossi Hamtzani, the store owner recently agreed to a plea deal without a predetermined sentencing range, allowing both the prosecution and defense to independently argue for their desired penalties before the court. During the sentencing hearing, several individuals testified on the defendant's behalf, including Gedera Regional Council head Sahar Pinto, who described him as a generous, kind-hearted man with good morals, highlighting his contributions and assistance to others.

The judge acknowledged that the defendant had returned significant sums to the state treasury as part of taking responsibility for his actions. However, she concluded that he had "chosen to follow a systematic and continuous criminal pattern over an entire decade." Ultimately, she imposed a 16-month prison sentence and a fine of NIS 60,000.
