Israeli Insurance Agent Sentenced to Prison for Tax Evasion
A Tel Aviv District Court has sentenced Daniel Meir, an insurance agent and manager of Dani Meir Life Insurance Agency Ltd., to 12 months in prison and a fine of 12,000 shekels for tax evasion. Meir was convicted of omitting transactions totaling over 1 million shekels from his Value Added Tax (VAT) reports between 2018 and 2020, with the intent to evade taxes.
According to the amended indictment, to which Meir and his company pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal, they conducted transactions amounting to approximately 1.52 million shekels during that period. Of this sum, about 1.14 million shekels were deliberately left out of their VAT reporting, resulting in a tax liability of 166,127 shekels.
The Israel Tax Authority reported that the omission was only partially rectified. While 40,676 shekels were recovered through payments and collection efforts, a remaining debt is still outstanding.
The court accepted the Tax Authority's position in the plea agreement, imposing the maximum sentence of 12 months imprisonment requested by the authority. Judge Guy Avnon noted that Meir had a prior conviction for a similar offense and committed the current crimes while a previous criminal proceeding was ongoing against him. The judge emphasized that past legal actions had failed to deter Meir from re-offending.
The case was handled by attorney Merav Yuli from the Netanya VAT division, following an investigation by the same unit.
