Two Israeli Women's Basketball Players Vie for EuroLeague Berth
Israeli basketball players Doron Cohen Sweets and Romy Levi are set to compete for a spot in the prestigious Women's EuroLeague with their team, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade. They will play a decisive qualifying match on Wednesday against Hungarian team Miskolc.
Should they win, Cohen Sweets and Levi would become the first pair of Israeli women to play together in the EuroLeague. Last season, Daniel Raber became the fourth Israeli woman to play in the league, and Jordan Garzon is expected to be the fifth after signing with Zaragoza this summer.
Cohen Sweets, 22, contributed 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal in Crvena Zvezda's previous 75-69 comeback victory against Brno, which secured their place in this final qualifying round. Levi, who scored 3 points and grabbed a rebound in that game, joined the Serbian champions this summer after a successful college career in the United States.
"The connection with Romy is great, she's an amazing person to be around, and on the court we are building chemistry that can help us also in the national team windows," Cohen Sweets stated. "The excitement is there, I mainly want to perform and help the team enter the biggest competition in Europe. These are the games I wait for."
Cohen Sweets, who previously played in Israel's top league for Hapoel Rishon LeZion, also had a strong performance in the recent FIBA Women's EuroBasket qualifiers for the Israeli national team, averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists. Last season, Crvena Zvezda was eliminated in the EuroLeague qualifiers and competed in the EuroCup, where Cohen Sweets averaged 11.5 points per game.
