Lapid Demands Answers From Netanyahu on Election Security Threat

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has demanded urgent security clarifications from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the premier's warning about a potential threat to the upcoming elections. Lapid requested a meeting with Netanyahu to understand the nature of the threats and the government's planned measures to ensure the elections proceed unimpeded. The Prime Minister's Office stated that Netanyahu regularly discusses security matters with Lapid and that the military secretary has been instructed to brief the opposition leader.

Lapid proposed a four-way meeting involving Netanyahu, Shin Bet head David Zini, and Central Elections Committee chair Judge Noam Solberg, emphasizing that all responsible parties need full information if such a significant threat is publicly announced. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed that Netanyahu and Lapid are scheduled to meet Tuesday evening at 11:30 PM.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett raised separate security concerns, highlighting a significant shortage of approximately 20,000 soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Bennett asserted that this deficit is impacting operational capabilities and soldier safety, and warned that the army could collapse without addressing the enlistment of Haredi men. He criticized Netanyahu, Aryeh Deri, and Bezalel Smotrich for allegedly ignoring the personnel shortage and questioned who would defend Israel if the army is weakened.

Bennett stated his party's intention to push for increased mobilization and army strengthening. He also noted that ongoing rocket fire further strains IDF resources, sometimes forcing soldiers to abandon positions due to insufficient personnel. Bennett directly challenged Netanyahu's security warnings, asking who would fight against enemies if the IDF is being undermined.
