Palestinian Elections: Candidate Registration Extended Amid West Bank Closure

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has extended the candidate registration period for the legislative elections scheduled for November. The extension aims to provide additional time for lists and candidates to finalize their applications and submit required documents to the Central Elections Commission. The registration period has been lengthened from 12 to 18 days, with the new deadline for submissions set for October 13 at 4 PM, moved from the original October 7 deadline.

The Palestinian presidency stated that the decision considers "field difficulties and restrictions on movement and travel," intending to offer more time for candidates to complete the nomination procedures. This move follows the Israeli military's announcement of a comprehensive closure on the West Bank until October 3, coinciding with Jewish holidays.

As of the announcement, seven candidate lists had submitted applications. The Central Elections Commission confirmed receiving a new application from a list named "Al-Finiq" (The Phoenix), bringing the total to seven. Six lists had applied on the first day: "Palestine Future Coalition," "Justice and Construction," "Democratic Unity and Change," "National Initiative," "New Path," and "Labor."

The commission emphasized that submitting an application does not guarantee final approval, as all requests will undergo review and verification to ensure they meet legal requirements and have complete documentation before a final decision is made.

The extension of the candidate registration period does not alter the date of the legislative elections, which remain scheduled for November 28. The Central Elections Commission confirmed that the electoral process will proceed according to the revised schedule resulting from the extended nomination phase. Candidate registration is the third stage of the electoral process, following voter registration and the publication and objection phase. The elections will be conducted using a full proportional representation list system.
