Meitav Trade Reports Data Breach Attempt Affecting Thousands of Clients
Meitav Trade, Israel's largest non-bank trading platform, reported an attempted breach that may have exposed personal information of some clients. The incident, which occurred over the past weekend, involved a malicious actor sending thousands of SMS messages containing one-time verification codes to clients who had not attempted to log in. The actor also attempted to change the phone numbers associated with verification codes, but these attempts were unsuccessful.
An internal investigation, conducted with an external vendor, revealed that an external party managed to exploit a function in the vendor's interface to extract personal data from a limited number of clients. The exposed information included names, ID numbers, and bank account numbers. Meitav Trade emphasized that access to trading systems, client accounts, or funds was not gained, and no passwords, financial details, or identification documents were compromised.
The company stated it places a high priority on protecting client privacy and data. Following the report, Meitav Trade's stock initially dropped at the market open on Tuesday but later recovered and was trading with no significant change. The company is valued at approximately 1 billion shekels and serves about 134,000 clients.
