Portland Trail Blazers Face Key Questions Ahead of NBA Season

The Portland Trail Blazers are officially kicking off their 2026-27 NBA season with media day, as the team prepares for training camp and preseason games. With the regular season opener on October 20th, the Blazers will play four exhibition games, including two against the Golden State Warriors, one versus the London Lions, and one against the Kings. This preseason marks the debut for new acquisition Ja Morant and head coach Chauncey Billups.

Following a strong recent season, the Blazers underwent significant changes this summer under owner Tom Dundon. A primary focus is integrating new point guards while retaining last year's starter, particularly in relation to Deni Avdija, who thrives with the ball in his hands. Coach Billups has indicated Avdija will be the primary ball-handler, stating, "We'd be crazy not to give him the ball." Avdija averaged significant ball possession time last season, and his efficiency with the ball is seen as crucial to the team's ceiling, even with new guards joining.

While Avdija is considered the team's best player, the franchise remains Damian Lillard's team. Lillard, who has returned to full health and appears significantly leaner, is expected to resume his role as the primary point guard. Morant has expressed his commitment to supporting Lillard, and they are anticipated to start together during the preseason. Lillard commented on the potential synergy, saying, "If I bring the ball up and kick it out to Morant or Avdija, I'll feel good about that. If they advance the ball and kick it out to me for a three, I'll feel good about that." Lillard's past experience playing alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has a similar play style to Avdija, offers optimism for their partnership.

Avdija himself reflected on his past season, which was hampered by injuries and a roster of inexperienced players and an interim coach. He feels "99.9% healthy" and has worked on efficient movement. This season, his offensive role may shift, with a potential decrease in his usage rate as the team focuses on drives from Avdija, Lillard, and Morant. This could lead to increased efficiency despite fewer shot attempts. The team's management, led by GM Joe Cronin, is also addressing contract extensions, including Avdija's, though a deal before the season opener seems unlikely. Cronin emphasized that Avdija is part of the team's long-term plans, noting he contacted Avdija after the Morant trade to ensure alignment.
