Portland Trail Blazers Face Key Questions Ahead of NBA Season

The Portland Trail Blazers are officially kicking off their 2026-27 NBA season with media day, as the team prepares for training camp ahead of their October 20th opener. The team faces a crucial preseason, including four exhibition games against the Golden State Warriors, London Lions, and Sacramento Kings. This period will be a significant test for new head coach Chauncey Billups and star player Ja Morant.

Following a strong recent season, the Trail Blazers underwent significant changes in the offseason under owner Tom Dundon. A primary focus is integrating new point guards while retaining last year's starter, particularly with star player Deni Avdija, who thrives with the ball in his hands. Coach Billups has indicated Avdija will be the primary ball-handler, stating, "We'd be crazy not to give him the ball." Avdija averaged nearly seven minutes of possession per game last season, a high mark in the league, and the team's ceiling depends on his playmaking.

Despite the additions, the team will still revolve around Damian Lillard, who has returned to full health and appears significantly leaner. Lillard expressed confidence in sharing playmaking duties, saying, "If I bring the ball up and kick it out to Morant or Avdija, I'll feel good about it. If they advance the ball and kick it out to me for a three, I'll feel good about it." Lillard's experience playing alongside players with similar styles to Avdija suggests potential for a successful partnership.

Avdija himself feels nearly 100% recovered and has worked on efficient movement. Last season, he often played with a depleted roster and a rookie coach, forcing him into a more demanding role. This season, his offensive responsibilities may decrease, allowing him to focus more on defense. While his shot attempts might decrease, his efficiency could rise, boosting the team's overall performance.

Regarding Avdija's contract extension, General Manager Joe Cronin stated that negotiations are complex and hopes for a resolution within a year or two, similar to Scottie Henderson's situation. A deal before the season opener seems unlikely and could be a financial setback for Avdija. However, Cronin's communication with key players, including Avdija, after the Morant trade signals the team's intent to keep him long-term.
