Israel Prepares for Direct Houthi Attack After Regional Conflicts

Israeli defense officials anticipate that the Houthi rebels in Yemen will directly target Israel once their current confrontations with Saudi Arabia and the United States conclude. According to a senior defense source speaking to Walla, the Yemeni rebels prefer to avoid fighting multiple adversaries simultaneously and will likely resume attacks on Israel immediately after their engagements with other forces end. While not currently challenging the Israeli military directly, the Houthis continue to threaten maritime trade routes and global shipping. Several merchant vessels have reported threats in recent months after declaring their intention to unload cargo in Israel.

The disruption of shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden has significantly impacted the Israeli economy. The port of Eilat has not yet returned to full operational capacity, with some maritime activities redirected to the ports of Ashdod and Haifa. In response to ongoing threats emanating from the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a critical area for global shipping also involving actors beyond Iran and the Houthis, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have heightened vigilance in the Red Sea.

The IDF has also strengthened coordination with the Jordanian and Egyptian militaries and established immediate, independent intervention forces in the Eilat region. These forces will serve as the initial response for the Red Sea's Eilat brigade. Concurrently, the IDF's Intelligence Directorate is expanding its target bank against the Houthis to refine its spatial warning model and prepare targets for rapid transition from routine to emergency response.

The IDF emphasizes that this preparedness is designed to enable a broad and immediate response if the military is required to thwart the Houthis' capabilities and intentions in the region in real-time.
