Austrian Food Vendor Accused of Refusing Service to Israeli Family Over Gaza Conflict

An Israeli family vacationing in Bad Hofgastein, Austria, has accused a local food stall owner of refusing to serve them and throwing away their prepared food upon learning they were Israeli and Jewish. The family claims the vendor cited "because of Gaza" as the reason for his refusal. The incident has prompted the regional authority to open an administrative punitive proceeding against the business owner, who denies the allegations, calling them "nonsense."

According to the family's account, the vendor removed the hamburgers from the grill and discarded them when he discovered their identity. The family described the experience as "shocking" and emotionally distressing. Following the incident, they filed a formal complaint with the regional authority, which confirmed it would investigate and initiate administrative proceedings, a preliminary legal step that does not constitute a formal finding of guilt.

Reports have emerged on social media alleging similar hostile encounters with the same vendor by other Israelis and Hebrew-speaking tourists. Eli Rosen, president of the Jewish community in Salzburg, Styria, and Carinthia, has called for a swift investigation and warned against the spillover of political condemnations against Israel into overt antisemitism.

The Israeli Embassy in Vienna expressed deep concern, stating that discrimination against Israelis and Jews is unacceptable and urging practical measures if clarifications and warnings are insufficient. Ambassador David Roet noted on social media that such incidents cannot be separated from a public climate that allows the normalization of antisemitism and anti-Israel falsehoods.

This incident occurs amidst strained diplomatic relations, following a recent conversation between Israeli Foreign Minister G Gideon Saar and Austrian Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The discussion aimed to de-escalate tensions after Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen accused the Israeli government of committing "war crimes." Saar emphasized the importance of the alliance with Austria, presented Israel's position on recent terror incidents in the West Bank, and discussed expected diplomatic cooperation at the UN Security Council.
