Wix-Owned Base44 Launches AI Coding Tool to Challenge Competitors

Base44, a company acquired by Wix, has announced the launch of Base Code, a new standalone product designed to connect existing codebases to a shared cloud development environment. This move positions Base44 directly against leading AI development tools such as Claude Code and Cursor.

Base Code allows teams to link code repositories from GitHub, with the company's AI agent learning the codebase to automatically establish a complete cloud environment. The agent can handle complex repositories, set up databases and infrastructure, and provide a live preview of the application. From there, team members can modify code using natural language prompts, see changes in real-time, and submit them as pull requests, all while adhering to the organization's review and approval processes.

The product aims to solve bottlenecks where minor code changes require direct developer involvement, diverting them from core tasks and causing delays for product, design, and operations teams. Base Code provides a cloud environment accessible via browser or mobile without local installation. It offers instant previews, the option to select different AI models, and enables real-time collaboration among product managers, designers, QA personnel, and engineers.

Security features for large organizations include encryption of secret keys and restricted permissions for importing approved repositories. Yoav Orlev, Base44's VP of Product, explained the key differentiator: "In other tools, a developer downloads the tool to their personal computer and sees the changes only on their machine. When they finish, transferring the change to the product manager can take valuable time or require an in-person meeting. We take the code, analyze it in the cloud, and prepare everything needed for execution. The result is a workspace similar to Figma, but for developers and the entire team, a place where everyone can work together on the same code simultaneously."
