Ex-IDF General Israel Shomer Cleared of Criminal Charges in Misconduct Probe

The military police investigation into retired Brigadier General Israel Shomer has concluded, with prosecutors leaning towards not filing criminal charges. Shomer was investigated on suspicion of improper conduct related to a relationship with a female officer subordinate to him.

Sources familiar with the matter told N12 that the investigation found that while a power imbalance existed between Shomer and the officer, their relationship was consensual. Consequently, it is anticipated that Shomer will face disciplinary proceedings rather than a criminal indictment, as there is insufficient evidence to support criminal charges.

Shomer, a former senior officer in the Israeli military who previously served as head of the Operations Directorate and was considered for promotion to Major General, has been cooperating fully with the investigation. His legal representatives stated that his actions do not constitute a criminal offense and emphasized that he took full responsibility for managing an inappropriate relationship, subsequently retiring from the IDF.

While the criminal investigation appears to be concluding without charges, the military advocate general's office still needs to complete its review, including allowing the officer and her legal team to review the investigation materials. The expectation is that the case will be finalized shortly, barring any significant new developments. Shomer also played a role in the October 7th events, joining the fight against terrorists in his kibbutz and mobilizing a reserve division under his command.
