Iran Seeks Guarantees Against Israeli Attack in Nuclear Talks

Mediating nations are pressuring Iran to make concessions on its nuclear program in an effort to restart talks with the United States, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. These efforts continue despite President Donald Trump's earlier statement that he had rejected an offer from Tehran. Iran has not yet shown willingness to accept the demands placed upon it.

A senior official from one of the countries involved in the negotiations stated that Iran is prepared to be flexible regarding its nuclear program and was close to an agreement during talks with Vice President J.D. Vance. However, this official added that Iran is demanding explicit assurances that Israel will not attack it again once an agreement is reached with the U.S.

Despite Trump's rejection of the Iranian proposal, Qatari mediators are continuing indirect negotiations, shuttling between the U.S. and Iran in an attempt to reach a deal. This was confirmed by a senior American official and two regional sources.

Last Thursday, the Prime Minister of Qatar met with Iran's president in New York to discuss the possibility of an agreement with the Trump administration. Shortly thereafter, Qatari officials met with White House envoy Steve Witkoff in New York to update him on the discussions. A regional source familiar with the indirect negotiations indicated that Qatari mediators discussed the original Iranian proposal with both sides, formulated a compromise offer to bridge the gaps, and submitted it to the U.S. and Iran for review.
