Gazan Student in Netherlands Suspended After Claiming Role in Oct. 7 Massacre
Maastricht University in the Netherlands has temporarily suspended a Gazan student after he posted a video on social media claiming to have participated in the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel. The student, who has a popular Instagram account with around 30,000 followers, shared a video of himself watching Hamas footage of the massacre, during which he stated, "I took part in this." He also pointed to masked militants in the video and said, "This is me."
The university confirmed the video's existence and immediately took disciplinary action. A spokesperson stated that the student is banned from campus and classes while an investigation determines if and under what conditions he can continue his studies. The university emphasized that the student's suspension was necessary to ensure the safety and uninterrupted academic activities of the student community, which had expressed significant concern and unease over the posted content and reactions.
While the student's claims have not been officially verified, the university is examining the situation. The student's social media also features content with a jihadist nature, including posts about his brother who was killed as a "shahid" (martyr) in Jabalia, Gaza. In one post, the student expressed a wish to meet the same end as his brother.
