Israel Delays E1 Settlement Tender Post-Election Amid Calls for West Bank Offensive

Israel's Attorney General has ordered a one-month postponement of the deadline for bids on a settlement tender in the E1 area, east of Jerusalem, pushing the new deadline past the upcoming Israeli elections. The decision, aimed at mitigating concerns that the tender could be exploited for electoral purposes, does not cancel the project but adjusts the timeline for bids on 2,167 housing units. The original deadline was October 25, just two days before the November 27 elections.

This E1 project, situated between Jerusalem and the Ma'ale Adumim settlement, is part of a larger plan encompassing 3,401 units, with a separate tender for 1,234 units already issued in August. The E1 plan has faced international objections due to its potential to disrupt Palestinian geographical contiguity between the northern and southern West Bank.

Concurrently, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich intensified his rhetoric regarding the West Bank, advocating for an "all-out war" and the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority in a podcast interview. Smotrich stated, "We must go to war in Judea and Samaria. We do what we did in Gaza. We dismantle the Palestinian Authority, it is a terrorist authority." His remarks followed warnings from senior Israeli military and security officials about the escalating situation in the West Bank.

Smotrich dismissed these warnings, questioning the officials' lack of concrete proposals and stating, "When they came to the cabinet and said that, I said: What do you want? Tell us what to do. You are the army." He added, "Let the Chief of Staff say what he suggests. I don't understand these meaningless warnings."

However, the head of the Ma'ale Adumim settlement opposed the tender's postponement, vowing legal action. He argued that the decision to advance the project was made months prior and that halting it now constitutes a significant political intervention. The controversy surrounding E1 continues amid international pressure and warnings to companies against participating in related tenders, with the project itself remaining active.
