Israel Delays E1 Housing Tender Until After Elections Amid Political Controversy

The Israeli Attorney General's office has ordered a one-month delay in the tender for the construction of 1,234 housing units in the E1 area, located between Ma'ale Adumim and Jerusalem. The tender will now be published only after the upcoming Knesset elections.

The decision to postpone the tender, which was slated for publication soon, is due to its timing during the election period. This move has drawn sharp criticism from the Ma'ale Adumim municipality, which announced its intention to appeal the decision.

Ma'ale Adumim Mayor Guy Yifrach condemned the postponement, stating that halting this specific tender constitutes a political intervention, especially as other construction tenders proceed nationwide. He argued that the project in E1 has been delayed for decades and that young couples and children should not be held hostage by such decisions.

The E1 plan, a focal point of international controversy for years due to opposition to construction in the area, is seen by some, including MK Bezalel Smotrich, as crucial for preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state. The municipality insists the political decision to advance the project predates the election cycle and that the tender process had been proceeding professionally.
