Israel Denies Halting E1 Settlement Construction Ahead of Elections
British sources told The New York Times that Israel had indicated it would halt construction in the E1 area, a move that would effectively sever Palestinian territorial contiguity between Ramallah and Bethlehem and connect the Ma'ale Adumim settlement to Jerusalem. However, Israeli officials have denied these reports.
The American newspaper noted that four weeks prior to the announcement of sanctions on settlements in the West Bank, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Gidelon Saar. The conversation was described in the report as "tense." Three sources claimed that Saar "clearly hinted" during the call that tenders for construction in the E1 area would not be opened before the elections on October 27.
A week after this conversation, Israel announced plans for an additional 1,200 housing units in E1, contradicting the alleged assurances given to Britain.
