Top Rabbi Orders Task Force to Address Haredi Housing Crisis

In response to the worsening housing shortage within the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community, Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, a leading figure in the Lithuanian Haredi sector, has ordered the formation of an emergency task force. The group is tasked with developing a comprehensive plan to find solutions for the community's housing distress, which includes exploring new residential areas, establishing community infrastructure, and devising ways to lower construction costs. This directive was issued during a small emergency meeting held at Rabbi Hirsch's home, attended by members of the community's housing committee.

The discussion focused on the struggles of young families and Torah scholars (avreichim) facing difficulties in purchasing apartments due to soaring prices and regulatory and economic barriers. Rabbi Hirsch emphasized the need to shift from addressing individual cases to creating a broad, long-term strategy. The committee is expected to identify the community's needs, pinpoint major obstacles, and propose actionable solutions.

Recent changes in government and legal policies are also contributing to the crisis. According to reports, the Attorney General's stance has restricted or prevented the eligibility of draft evaders for government housing programs like "Mechir Matara" and "Mechir LeMishtaken." The housing committee, guided by Rabbi Hirsch and Rabbi David Cohen, has been examining new residential options suitable for Haredi families, particularly those with many children.

Beyond just housing units, the plan is intended to include the development of community support systems, such as educational institutions and synagogues. Simultaneously, solutions in planning and economics are being explored to reduce housing costs and enable construction that meets the community's long-term needs. Under Rabbi Hirsch's instruction, the committee must now establish priorities and timelines for implementation, aiming to create a more organized and extensive response to the Haredi housing crisis.
