Iran's Top Diplomat Smiles Amid Question on Executions

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded with a smile when questioned by Israeli journalist Efrat Lachter about the discrepancy between Iran's claims of being victims of terrorism and its own human rights record. Lachter pointed out that over 900 people have reportedly been executed in Iran this year, with thousands more imprisoned or tortured, questioning how Iranian leaders could present themselves as victims.

This exchange occurred shortly after Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian addressed the UN General Assembly, accusing then-President Donald Trump of attempting to intimidate Iran and rejecting the label of 'terrorist' for his country, asserting instead that Iranians were the true victims of terrorism. Upon arriving in New York for the UN General Assembly, Araghchi had also sharply criticized Israel and the United States.
