Ex-Hamas Guard Arrested in UK for Alleged European Terror Plot

An individual, formerly a bodyguard for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, has been arrested in the United Kingdom on suspicion of orchestrating a terror plot targeting Jewish communities and Israeli interests across Europe. The suspect, identified only as "Mr. X" due to ongoing legal proceedings, reportedly served on Haniyeh's personal security detail in Gaza before relocating to the UK over a decade ago. He had previously been arrested in Egypt for alleged involvement in smuggling weapons into Gaza via a tunnel. Despite his past, he was granted refugee status and later British citizenship in the UK, having arrived in 2012 and applied for asylum in 2015. He allegedly changed his name multiple times and worked as an IT consultant.

German authorities are seeking his extradition, suspecting his central role in planning attacks against Jewish community centers, Israeli diplomats, and pro-Israel rallies in Germany and Austria. Investigators claim he transported firearms, ammunition, and camouflage gear from Berlin to Vienna. He is also accused of pre-recording a video, masked and armed before a Hamas flag, framing the planned attack as retaliation for the October 7th massacre on behalf of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

The arrest occurred in November in central London by the UK's National Crime Agency, following intelligence shared by Israel's Mossad and German intelligence services. German authorities view this case as indicative of a potential shift in Hamas's operational focus, with plots extending beyond the Middle East to target Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions.
