UK Granted Asylum, Citizenship to Hamas Leader's Ex-Bodyguard Accused of Terror Plots
The British newspaper The Times revealed that the United Kingdom granted asylum and later citizenship to an individual who previously served as a bodyguard for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The suspect, known in the UK as "Mr. X" for legal reasons, was part of Haniyeh's personal security detail in Gaza. Foreign reports identify him as Muhammad Na'im, son of Bassam Na'im, a senior official in Hamas's political bureau.
After leaving Gaza, Na'im arrived in Britain, where he received asylum and subsequently British citizenship. In November 2025, he was arrested in London based on intelligence information provided by Israel and Germany. According to an indictment filed against him in Germany, he was involved in planning attacks against Jewish centers, Israeli diplomats, and pro-Israel demonstrations in Germany and Austria. He is also accused of transferring handguns and ammunition from Berlin to Vienna.
The possibility of his extradition to Israel is currently being considered.
