Irish Footballer Jason Knight Opposes Playing Israel Amidst Widespread Boycott Calls

Irish national football team midfielder Jason Knight has become the first player to publicly state his opposition to the upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Israel, scheduled for September 27, 2026, in Debrecen, Hungary. Knight's comments come amid significant public pressure in Ireland to boycott the game entirely.

Speaking to reporters after a match against Kosovo, Knight stated, "I don’t think the game should be going ahead, but it will go ahead in the end." He added that the team would discuss the matter further as a group, acknowledging the intense media and psychological pressure surrounding the fixture, which has shifted focus away from football.

Ireland's manager, Heimir Hallgrímsson, has also acknowledged the tension within the squad, noting that many players are deeply uncomfortable and psychologically disturbed by being forced to play against Israel.
