NYC Event Canceled for Israeli Poet Amid Safety Concerns

A planned appearance by renowned Israeli poet Hamutal Bar-Yosef in New York City has been canceled due to security concerns. The event, intended to mark the revival of the nonprofit Sheep Meadow Press and the Poets House library, was scheduled to feature Bar-Yosef presenting an American translation of her poetry collection "A Wonderful Mistake." It was also meant to signify the Poets House's return to active operations in Manhattan after a hiatus.

Greg Miller, head of Sheep Meadow Press, stated that the decision to cancel was driven by worries for the poet's safety. He explained that some Poets House staff members expressed discontent regarding the visit, and the general atmosphere within literary circles has become challenging for Israeli authors. Miller added that an Israeli representative would require security in the current climate, prompting the decision to postpone the event and seek an alternative venue in the future.

Representatives from Poets House declined to comment on the situation, and Bar-Yosef herself refused to be interviewed.
