Jewish Author Removed From Spanish Festival Amid Pro-Palestinian Pressure

Argentine-Jewish author Ariana Harwicz was removed from the Cultur Alh festival program in Granada, Spain, just days before its opening. According to the Spanish newspaper El País, Harwicz had publicly opposed a cultural boycott of Israel. The festival's management confirmed that her removal followed complaints from the University Network for Palestine in Granada and a student club participating in the event.

Harwicz protested the decision on social media, stating her opposition to boycotting creators based on their nationality. She drew a parallel to her stance against boycotting Russian artists following the war in Ukraine.

However, seven authors participating in the festival issued a statement supporting the decision. They argued that the controversy stemmed from Harwicz's views on Israel and Palestine, not her literary work, and that her statements crossed the boundaries of free expression expected of festival participants.

The University of Granada clarified that it does not support Harwicz's removal and emphasized its commitment to freedom of expression, creativity, and pluralism of opinions. The Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain also condemned the cancellation, expressing regret over the perceived damage to free speech and cultural pluralism.

The festival, featuring over 30 events in arts, literature, and humanities, continued in Granada.
