Spanish Festival Pauses Allianz Sponsorship Amid Pro-Palestine Boycott Threat

Germany's Allianz insurance group has suspended its sponsorship of a major Spanish cultural festival after more than 20 artists and cultural figures threatened to boycott the event due to the company's alleged support for Israel. The signatories stated in a release that Allianz is the world's largest buyer of Israeli sovereign bonds, thus providing essential financial backing for the "ongoing genocide" in Gaza. They declared they would boycott the annual "Festival of Ideas" in Madrid unless the festival committed to not accepting financial support from companies collaborating with Israel in its actions against Palestinians.

The artists, including Oscar-nominated Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen, argued that the festival should not help "whitewash the image of economic entities that enable annihilation, occupation, and apartheid." In response, the festival announced on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with Allianz to suspend the sponsorship for the event, which is set to begin Thursday and run for four days, featuring British author Zadie Smith.

The festival stated that both parties agreed on the necessity of the event remaining "a space dedicated to the free exchange of ideas, open debate, and diversity of opinions, without any external controversy distracting from its program, participants, or audience." The Palestinian cause has significant support in Spain, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez being a vocal critic of the war in Gaza. Spain was among 12 countries that recently announced sanctions on trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, amid rising settler violence against Palestinians.
