Maccabi Tel Aviv Falls in EuroLeague Opener Amidst Early Season Struggles

Maccabi Tel Aviv began their EuroLeague season with a disappointing 84-74 loss to ASVEL in Villeurbanne, France. Despite entering the game with momentum from a recent derby win against Hapoel Tel Aviv, the Israeli team delivered a poor performance, particularly in the first half.

Head coach Oded Kattash attributed the loss to a combination of factors, including excessive turnovers and a failure to match the opponent's physicality. "We had 11 turnovers in the first half, we expected to play better, we wanted to play better, but the guys are excited, it's the first game, it's still a kind of preseason," Kattash stated. He emphasized that the team needs to learn from this early setback, acknowledging that the 20 turnovers significantly impacted their defense and led to easy points for the opponent.

Kattash also noted issues with shot selection and a lack of offensive quality, despite the team's effort in the second half. "This is a bad result for us, we didn't expect to play this way. This is not the right way," he added, stressing that the EuroLeague offers no easy games and the team must improve.

Player Will Rayman echoed the coach's sentiments, highlighting the excessive turnovers as a key problem. "We lost too many balls. We need to continue building rhythm and flow in the offense, which is the most important part of our game," Rayman said. He expressed confidence that the team would have a better week ahead, referencing positive signs shown during the preseason.
