Austria Defeats Israel 3-1 in UEFA Nations League Opener

The Israeli national football team began its UEFA Nations League campaign with a tough 3-1 away loss to Austria on Thursday. Despite playing with ten men for a significant portion of the match, Israel appeared to be on track for a draw until two late goals sealed the victory for the hosts.

Austria took the lead in the 43rd minute through a penalty converted by Romano Schmid after Sasa Kalajdzic was fouled by Eidan Nahmias. Israel equalized in the 55th minute with a header from debutant Said Abu Farhi, his first goal for the national team, assisted by Eliyell Peretz. However, Abu Farhi was sent off moments later after receiving a second yellow card for removing a corner flag during his celebration.

Despite being a man down, Israel held on for over half an hour, with goalkeeper Daniel Peretz making several crucial saves, notably in the 85th minute. The Israeli defense ultimately collapsed in stoppage time. In the 91st minute, Philipp Mwene scored to put Austria ahead 2-1, and Kalajdzic added a third goal in the 93rd minute to secure the 3-1 win.

This defeat marks a difficult start for Israel in the second tier of the UEFA Nations League. The team aims to finish in the top two of its group to remain in contention for a potential playoff spot for the European Championship. Israel's next match is scheduled against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday.
