Wayne Rooney Reveals Jewish Roots, Son Kai Eligible for Israeli Citizenship

Football legend Wayne Rooney disclosed on a podcast that he has Jewish heritage, a revelation that grants his 16-year-old son, Kai Rooney, Jewish roots. Kai, who plays for Manchester United's youth team, is not considered Jewish by matrilineal descent as his mother is not Jewish. However, under Israel's Law of Return, he is eligible for Israeli citizenship.

Kai Rooney has already broken records at Manchester United's academy, scoring 56 goals for the under-12s and younger age groups. He previously spent time at Manchester City's academy before returning to United. Currently playing above his age group, he is regarded as a significant talent, attracting interest from several English clubs. He is currently playing alongside Michael Carrick's son in the academy.

Like his father, Kai played as a forward in his youth before moving to the wing. He has drawn comparisons to Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli, noted for his ability to run behind defenders, join attacks, and find open space rather than solely participating in build-up play.

Kai is represented by the same agent as his father. While some Manchester United fans have noted his immense talent at younger ages, they also suggest he has stagnated somewhat in the past two seasons. Despite this, he has been promoted to play above his age group and may receive opportunities, at least in training, with the senior Manchester United squad early in his career. Rooney has been awarded a two-year scholarship with United and will turn 17 during the second year of this scholarship. Following this, the club will decide whether to promote him to the reserve team, up to the under-21 level, or release him.
