Hasidic Man Traveling to Ukraine Drafted into Ukrainian Army
Yonatan Karlinsky, a 49-year-old Breslov Hasid from Beitar Illit, was arrested at the Ukraine-Romania border while attempting to return home from Uman, Ukraine. It was discovered that Karlinsky was subject to conscription into the Ukrainian army. He has since been assigned as a doctor to a military unit in the Kharkiv region.
The Jewish Federation in Ukraine is reportedly ensuring Karlinsky receives kosher food and has access to religious necessities during his service. Karlinsky had traveled to Uman, a city in central Ukraine, which is a pilgrimage site for Breslov Hasidim, particularly around the Rosh Hashanah holiday.
