Israeli Doctor Detained in Ukraine to Serve in Military Hospital
Yonatan Karlinsky, a resident of Beitar Illit, who traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, has been detained by Ukrainian authorities on his way back to Israel. He is currently being held at a military facility near Odessa.
Ukrainian officials have refused to release Karlinsky, citing his prior military service in Ukraine and his profession as a doctor. He is expected to be assigned to a military unit in Kharkiv.
Despite his detention, Karlinsky's family has been assured that he is being provided with kosher food and religious items. The circumstances of his detention stem from his presence in Uman, a pilgrimage site for many Hasidic Jews, during the Jewish New Year, and his past military background in Ukraine.
