IDF Slams Police Report on Qalqilya Tunnel Discovery

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a rare and sharp criticism of the Israel Police on Thursday, following a police report from the previous day claiming the discovery of a "tunnel under construction" approximately 25 meters deep near Qalqilya, along with weapons and fertilizer intended for explosives. The IDF stated that after investigating the sites, it was determined that no tunnel was found, but rather two shafts only about 12 meters deep.

During the overnight operation in Qalqilya, IDF forces seized weapons, including an M16 rifle, a hunting rifle, a pistol, and ammunition. Four suspects involved in terrorist activity were arrested. The IDF described the police report as "irresponsible."

A police source responded to the IDF's criticism, suggesting the dispute was about "credit" and that anger arose overnight due to a lack of full attribution for the operation. The source maintained that the initial report was accurate and based on field findings, and that the IDF spokesperson chose to issue a statement that "shortened the tunnel's length."

The police source further stated that cooperation between the Judea and Samaria District and the Central Command is excellent and that intelligence was handled according to procedures. The source asserted that the Israel Police operates with full responsibility for public safety, especially since October 7th, in all areas of terrorism and weaponry.
