El'or Azaria's Criminal Record Officially Expunged

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has signed off on the final deletion of El'or Azaria's criminal record, following a decision by President Isaac Herzog. The expungement officially takes effect after Gallant's signature, completing the process initiated by Herzog.

Hersog's decision, made before Yom Kippur, was prompted by a request from the Defense Minister and considered various factors. These included the significant time elapsed since the incident, Azaria's completion of his prison sentence, and the statute of limitations having passed for his offenses. Azaria himself expressed regret over the incident's severe consequences, acknowledging in his appeal that the shooting was a "operational mistake" in hindsight and that he would not have carried it out. He also emphasized his respect for IDF values and his desire to raise his children with them, while seeking to remove employment barriers.

The President also weighed Azaria's changed personal and family circumstances over the past decade, including complex medical issues his family has faced. Herzog concluded that after nearly ten years, having served his sentence and paid his debt to society, Azaria should be allowed to start a new chapter without a criminal record.
