Hapoel Tel Aviv Center Dan Orutho Declines National Team Offer

American center Dan Orutho, entering his second season with Hapoel Tel Aviv, has stated he will not play for the Israeli national basketball team, despite being asked. Orutho explained that while he heard about the possibility, it was never concrete from his perspective and he doesn't play for national teams. He cited his commitment to playing for the US or Nigeria, his parents' homeland, and the difficulty of extending his time away from home given he already spends ten months a year abroad.

Orutho expressed high ambitions for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the upcoming 2026-27 season, aiming for the EuroLeague Final Four. He acknowledged the team's disappointing loss in the Super Cup but emphasized the team's potential and the importance of a positive attitude. He also praised owner Ofer Yanai's vision for the club and expressed his own desire to bring glory back to Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Reflecting on his NBA aspirations, Orutho admitted he still thinks about returning to the league, having previously played there before coming to Europe. He believes he is still young enough and has more to prove, but is currently focused on maximizing his opportunity with Hapoel Tel Aviv. He also discussed his close friendship with teammate Elijah Bryant and his admiration for coach Dani Orutho, describing him as a player's coach who pushes them to improve.

Orutho also addressed his contract clause that allowed him to avoid coming to Israel during wartime, stating he did not expect to use it and felt unprepared when the situation arose. He confirmed the clause is no longer relevant and he is happy to represent Hapoel Tel Aviv, noting that Tel Aviv's weather is better than Sofia's.
