Uruguay still has not won in the 2026 World Cup group stage after drawing 2-2 with Cape Verde in the second round of Group 8. The result keeps Uruguay on two points after its opening 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia.
Cape Verde’s goals were the first in its history at the World Cup. Kevin Pina and Helio Varela scored for the African side, and Varela played this season for Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Spain leads the group with four points. Uruguay and Cape Verde are tied on two points each, while Saudi Arabia is last with one.
In the final group matches, Uruguay will face Spain and Cape Verde will play Saudi Arabia.
