World Cup 2026 produced another dramatic night, with Cape Verde continuing its surprise run, Belgium stumbling again, and Egypt taking advantage at the top of Group G. The results left Uruguay and Belgium in danger of an early exit, while Cape Verde still has a chance to finish high in its group.
Uruguay and Cape Verde drew 2-2. Cape Verde, the tournament’s biggest surprise so far, had already held Spain to a draw and then struck first against Uruguay through Kevin Pina’s free kick, which also became Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup goal. Uruguay responded with two quick goals in six minutes before halftime, but Helio Varela, a Maccabi Tel Aviv player, equalized in the 61st minute into an empty net. It was Varela’s first goal for his national team, and he became the first foreign player from Israel’s Premier League to score at a World Cup. Uruguay and Cape Verde now both have two points. Cape Verde will face Saudi Arabia next, while Uruguay meets Spain.
Belgium also disappointed, drawing 0-0 with Iran. The Red Devils controlled 70% of the first half but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. In the 67th minute, young defender Nathan Ngoy lost the ball to Mehdi Taremi, fouled him, and was sent off directly. Iran could not capitalize on the numerical advantage, leaving Belgium with a second straight draw and complicating its qualification hopes. Belgium is expected to stay alive if it beats New Zealand in the next round.
Egypt won 3-1 over New Zealand after trailing early. Finn Surman put New Zealand ahead in the 15th minute, but Mostafa Ziko headed in the equalizer in the 58th minute, Mohamed Salah completed the turnaround in the 67th, and Trezeguet sealed it in the 82nd. Egypt moved into a strong position to finish first in the group and will face Iran in its final match.
