Cape Verde Stuns Spain With Goalless Draw in World Cup Debut
Spain, the European champion, was held to a surprising 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in Atlanta on Monday night, in the African side’s first-ever match in the World Cup. The result gave Cape Verde a historic point in the tournament and immediately ranked as one of the competition’s biggest shocks.
Spain controlled possession for long stretches, but repeatedly ran into a compact and disciplined Cape Verde defense led by center back Roberto “Pico” Lopes, who has 351 league appearances in Ireland. Just before halftime, Spain came closest to scoring when Marc Cucurella headed in a good cross and Ferran Torres hit the crossbar, then Mikel Oyarzabal’s follow-up was stopped by 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, the standout of the match.
After the break, Spain’s frustration grew. Lamine Yamal came on despite not being fully fit and helped create tempo, including a fine chance for substitute Mikel Merino, but Vozinha denied that effort too. Near the end, Oyarzabal had another clear opening, only for Lopes to throw himself in front of the shot and preserve the draw.
Cape Verde almost won it in stoppage time. Dini Borges rose highest from a corner and powered a header toward the middle of the goal, but Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón produced a huge save to keep the result level. The point leaves Group 8 wide open ahead of the late match between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, and Spain’s night in Atlanta will be remembered as a major warning to any team underestimating the “Blue Sharks.”
