Cape Verde Stuns Spain with Historic 0-0 Draw in Atlanta
Spain, the reigning European champion, was held to a surprising 0-0 draw by Cape Verde on Monday night in Atlanta in the teams’ World Cup match. For Cape Verde, it was a historic point in its first-ever appearance in the tournament, while Spain left with a result widely seen as a major disappointment.
Spain controlled possession for long stretches, but Luis de la Fuente’s team repeatedly ran into a compact, disciplined Cape Verde defense. Center back Roberto “Pico” Lopes, who has 351 league appearances in Ireland, led the back line and frustrated the Spanish attack. Near the end of the first half, Marc Cucurella headed in a dangerous cross and Ferran Torres had a clear chance, but he sent the ball off the crossbar. A minute later, Mikel Oyarzabal’s rebound effort was stopped by Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, who was the standout player.
After halftime, Spain grew increasingly anxious and its deliveries from Torres and Cucurella lacked quality. De la Fuente turned to Lamine Yamal, who was not fully fit, and the Barcelona star immediately raised the tempo. He soon created a strong chance for substitute Mikel Merino, but Vozinha saved again. Late on, Oyarzabal had another excellent opening, but Lopes made a crucial block to deny a certain goal.
The drama peaked deep in stoppage time when Cape Verde won a corner and Diney Borges rose above everyone to head toward the center of goal. Only a brilliant reflex save from Unai Simón prevented one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history. The result leaves Group 8 wide open ahead of the late match between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, and it ensured no team will underestimate the “Blue Sharks” again.
