KFC Faces Uncertainty in Israel Amidst Renewed Business Challenges

KFC's presence in Israel is once again under scrutiny following reports of new difficulties that could impact the fast-food chain's future in the country. While no official decision has been made regarding a complete withdrawal, industry discussions are exploring various scenarios for the brand's continued operation. A source close to the company confirmed that different developmental paths are being considered, though KFC maintains that its restaurants are operating normally.

Currently, KFC Israel lists 12 active locations on its official website, a significant decrease from the approximately 20 outlets it operated a few years ago. A major setback occurred in March 2025 when Mefco, one of KFC's two Israeli franchisees, ceased operations at eight of its restaurants. These closures, located in cities including Nof HaGalil, Hof Tzemach, Be'er Sheva, Ramla, Kfar Saba, Zichron Yaakov, and Yarka, represented about 40% of the chain's Israeli footprint. The company cited declining revenues and financial struggles of the specific franchisee as the reasons for the closures.

At the time of the March 2025 closures, KFC emphasized that this did not signify an exit from Israel. Plans were in place to transfer the closed restaurants to another franchisee to resume operations and stabilize the business. However, eighteen months later, concerns about the chain's future scale of presence in the Israeli market have resurfaced.

KFC has a history of challenges in Israel, with multiple attempts to establish a lasting presence marked by expansion, ownership changes, and subsequent closures. The brand previously exited the market in 2012, only to return in February 2020 with a new strategy. This included reverting to original recipes and abandoning kosher certification, a departure from its earlier adaptation to kashrut requirements, which some believed affected the product's taste.

Upon its return, KFC focused on opening branches outside of central Israel, with initial locations in Nazareth, Daliyat al-Karmel, Yarka, Baqa al-Gharbiyye, Be'er Sheva, Ramla, and Haifa. The chain later expanded to Petah Tikva, Rishon LeZion, Kfar Saba, and Tel Aviv. The current operational locations include restaurants in Tel Aviv, Givatayim, Petah Tikva, Rishon LeZion, Kfar Saba, Netanya, Haifa, and Ashdod.
