Maccabi Tel Aviv Opens EuroLeague Season With Optimism

Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to begin its 2026-2027 EuroLeague campaign, departing on Wednesday for France to face ASVEL Villeurbanne and Tony Parker in the opening round. Coach Oded Katash expressed excitement but cautioned against premature expectations, highlighting the league's intense nature and the strength of various teams, including those built on smaller budgets. Katash noted that ASVEL is a highly athletic team with dangerous guards, presenting a style unfamiliar to Maccabi.

Katash acknowledged Tony Parker's legendary status and expressed interest in seeing his influence on the opposing team. Regarding his own squad, Katash stated that while all players have returned, their fitness levels vary, and the final selection for the 12-man roster will be determined closer to the game. He also mentioned that Jimmy Clark is healthy but might be held out as a precaution.

"Our starting point as a roster, in terms of depth and continuity, is better," Katash said, emphasizing that the competition has intensified. He believes the team's success will depend on factors like playing games in Israel, maintaining player health, and their ability to connect as the season progresses. He also noted the need to focus on Patty Mills, acknowledging his strengths while also identifying potential weaknesses due to his age that Maccabi can exploit.

Player Ousmane Dieng expressed enthusiasm for the new season, emphasizing the team's collective desire to win and improve. He stated that the team is united under Katash and focused on their goal of winning the EuroLeague. Dieng stressed the importance of approaching every game as a final and continuously improving, starting with the first match.
