Maccabi Tel Aviv Basketball Season Opens with Optimism and Ambition

Maccabi Tel Aviv's basketball season is set to officially commence with the Social Super Cup against Hapoel Tel Aviv on Thursday. The team has undergone significant changes during the summer, including the high-profile transfer of Yam Madar from Hapoel Tel Aviv. New additions also include Keeton Wallace, Armando Bacot, Daniel Theis, Shane Hunter, and Bonzi Colson, who returns for another stint.

Club Chairman Shimon Mizrahi highlighted the club's rich history, noting the upcoming 50th anniversary of their first European Cup win in Belgrade. He also expressed efforts to bring EuroLeague games back to Israel, citing the current security stability and the return of flights. Dubai is also mentioned as a potential host for some of Maccabi's games, including the European Super Cup.

Mizrahi revealed that Maccabi has formally appealed to the EuroLeague, supported by letters from the President, Minister of Sports, and Police Commissioner, and is seeking a meeting with the EuroLeague chairman. He acknowledged that regional developments could complicate matters but expressed hope for positive outcomes.

Regarding the NBA's potential involvement with the EuroLeague, Mizrahi stated that no formal offer has been submitted yet, and any proposal would be discussed by owners on October 5th. He also briefly addressed ownership disputes, explaining that an arbitrator has been appointed and further details cannot be disclosed.

Head Coach Oded Katash expressed excitement for the new season, thanking management for their efforts in a challenging player market. He emphasized the importance of continuity with returning players and the integration of new additions. Katash noted the increased competition in both the Israeli league and European competitions, stressing the need for hard work and a strong defensive focus. He acknowledged the difficulty of integrating young players due to the team's high-level aspirations but affirmed the club's commitment to nurturing talent from its youth academy.

Katash set realistic but ambitious goals, stating that reaching the playoffs or play-in tournament would be a significant achievement, especially given the team's current circumstances, including starting the season away from home. He stressed the importance of team unity and playing as a family, drawing energy from the fans. The club's CEO, Avi Ben Tal, reported that season ticket sales have surpassed 9,250, indicating strong fan support, and highlighted improvements to the game-day experience.
