Driver Suspected of Fatally Striking Teenager Has Arrest Extended
A court on Wednesday extended by 24 hours the arrest of a driver suspected of fatally striking 17-year-old Amichai Attia in the Village complex in Hadera. The driver, Mahmoud Samhat from Kafr Mandi, is suspected of causing Attia's death, leaving the scene after an accident, and reckless driving or endangering human life.
Initially, police investigated the incident as a possible terror attack, but the suspicion of a nationalistic motive later weakened. The driver claims he was attacked by a crowd, feared for his life, and attempted to flee, during which he did not notice he had struck Attia.
Simultaneously, two suspects who allegedly shot at the driver and wounded him were questioned under caution. The court determined there was no indication the ramming was intentional but noted "contradictory indications regarding the driver's account and whether he could have failed to notice the impact."
The driver's detention was extended until Thursday to allow for the completion of the investigation.
