New Transgender Professional Guild Launches in Haifa to Boost Employment
A new professional network for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, 'The Transgender Guild,' has launched in Haifa and the Krayot region of Israel. The initiative aims to address significant employment challenges faced by the community, including high unemployment rates, discomfort in the workplace, and lower average wages compared to the general population and the broader LGBTQ+ community. The guild seeks to foster a professional community offering networking, knowledge sharing, mentorship, and mutual support, while also connecting members with potential employers and organizations.
The guild's development was inspired by discussions at roundtables organized by 'Haifa's Arc,' where employment emerged as a critical issue. Thomas Winters, a project manager for transgender and LGBTQ+ community initiatives, explained that many barriers are not overt employer discrimination but rather a lack of professional connections and informal support systems. "The barriers are often simply a lack of connections, of informal support networks, someone to show you what to do and how," Winters stated.
Statistics highlight the disparity: approximately 19% unemployment within the transgender community, compared to 6% for the general LGBTQ+ population and 3-4% for the general public. A 2023 study found that half of transgender individuals feel uncomfortable at work, and a 2019 survey indicated only 25% were employed full-time. The guild plans to create professional groups based on specific industries or roles, facilitate knowledge exchange, and identify supportive employers. It will also host broader events on topics like workers' rights and financial literacy.
Members like Eilayil Paran, who has experience in operational management and mentorship, emphasize the importance of mentorship for job interview preparation and navigating workplace dynamics. Maor Medina, who works in a tech company's back office, shared his experience of initially concealing his identity but now openly discusses his identity at work, noting that while his workplace is supportive, not all experiences are positive. He stressed the emotional toll of hiding one's identity and the value of having a network to discuss these daily dilemmas.
The Transgender Guild's official launch event is scheduled for October 5th in Haifa. Winters hopes the guild will not only provide professional development but also serve as a tool for social change, empowering the transgender community in the workforce and contributing to broader equality efforts. The initiative currently operates via a WhatsApp group and plans to remain free, with any future costs being optional.
