Thousands of Flights to Dubai at Risk as Israeli Airlines Face Restrictions

Thousands of flight tickets to Dubai purchased by Israelis are at risk of cancellation due to ongoing security directives that prohibit Israeli airlines from operating flights to the city until at least October 31. While Israeli travelers can still reach Dubai using foreign carriers like Fly Dubai and Etihad, Israeli airlines are currently grounded on this route.

The situation poses a significant problem for those who have already booked flights for November and beyond. If the security restrictions are extended past October, tickets sold by Israeli airlines for these future dates could be canceled, leaving thousands of passengers without travel plans. The central question remains whether the prohibition will be lifted by the end of October or extended, impacting the November flight schedule.

According to senior aviation industry sources, the underlying reason for the restriction is not a specific threat to aircrews or aircraft. Instead, it stems from disagreements between Israeli and Dubai security apparatuses regarding operational procedures and airport approvals. Until this dispute is resolved, Israeli airlines cannot resume flights to Dubai.

This is not the first instance of security directives affecting Israeli and foreign airlines differently. A similar situation occurred last year when Israeli airlines were barred from landing in Paphos, Cyprus, due to Shin Bet directives. While flights were rerouted to Larnaca, foreign airlines continued to operate to Paphos, highlighting how such directives disproportionately impact Israeli carriers.

The disparity arises because Israeli airlines must adhere to Israeli security regulations, while foreign airlines are governed by the rules of their country of registration. This can lead to scenarios where an Israeli flight is prohibited from a destination while a foreign airline continues to serve the same route. For Israeli passengers, this means reduced direct flight options during periods of restriction, though foreign carriers may still offer alternatives. The situation can also reverse during conflicts, with foreign airlines suspending flights to Israel while Israeli carriers continue some operations.
